A self-taught puppeteer, Mr J. F. Ley’s plays included comic, tragic, and political themes. In addition to writing all the scripts, Ley built the theatres, painted the scenery, sculpted the puppets and even created their costumes on an old Wertheim sewing machine. In 1951, Mr Ley was invited to join the Jubilee train, which toured Victoria with exhibition and performance troupes. During this tour he performed his popular Punch and Judy show on railway platforms.
