Vaudeville and Variety
The history of the Tivoli Circuit, the home of vaudeville and variety from 1901 to 1966, is highlighted by hundreds of costume and set designs by resident designer Angus Winneke, and photographs by Harry Jay and Zeus Merfield. Rival vaudeville managements run by George Sorlie, Max Reddy and Harry Wren are also represented, along with performers such as Roy Rene (‘Mo’), Will Mahoney, Charles Norman, Queenie Paul and Toni Lamond.
Angell, Barbara
Singer, dancer, comic and dramatic actress, script writer, choreographer, producer. Barbara Angell began her theatre career in the Melbourne Little Theatre production of The Guinea Pig. Angell performed on the Tivoli Circuit for over 5 years as a dancer, soubrette, singer and comic actress. By 1901, Harry Rickards' vaudeville companies could be seen in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth and New Zealand. Throughout the greater part of the twentieth century, the Tivoli Circuit with its magical concoction of song, dance, comedy and spectacle provided theatre-goers with an opportunity to experience the best in Australian and international variety and vaudeville. Winneke, Angus
Angus Winneke was born in Melbourne in 1911. One of very few professional theatre designers in Australia, Winneke worked full time for the Tivoli during the second World War. In 1983 Angus Winneke's family donated his collection of set and costume designs for the Tivoli and the Lido to the Performing Arts Museum. Collection holdings include over 350 designs, are scrapbooks compiled by Winneke through his working career at the Tivoli. Vaudeville 1940 - 1966.
